Flake floor coatings

Flake floors in Tyler, TX

A flake floor, also called a chip floor, is a coating with colored vinyl flakes broadcast into it. It hides dust and imperfections, adds a little grip, and is one of the most common choices for garage floors.

What a flake floor is

A flake floor starts like any professional coating: the concrete is diamond-ground and a base coat goes down. While the base coat is still wet, we broadcast colored vinyl flakes into it by hand. After it cures, we scrape and vacuum off the loose flakes and seal everything under a clear topcoat.

The flakes do three jobs. They give the floor its color and pattern, they hide the small pits, stains and tire marks that show on a solid color, and they add a light texture underfoot. That's why flake is such a common choice for garages and shops.

Partial or full broadcast

How much flake goes down changes the look and the feel of the floor.

  • Partial broadcast: flakes scattered over a solid base color, so the base shows between them. It's part of our Classic flake system.
  • Full broadcast: flakes added until the base coat is completely covered. It hides more, feels more like stone, and is what our Premium flake systems use.

Blends named for East Texas

Our flake blends are named after places around here: Brick Street, Rose Garden, Piney Woods, Lake Tyler, Graphite and Red Clay. Each one mixes three or four colors so the floor looks natural from a few feet away instead of speckled.

Lighter blends brighten a dark garage and hide dust. Darker blends hide tire marks and oil. You can try every blend on a sample garage, room or shop, or on a photo of your own floor, in the floor designer.

The topcoat matters as much as the flake

The clear topcoat is what you actually walk and drive on. On Classic flake it's an epoxy clear coat. On Premium it's polyaspartic, which typically resists yellowing in the sun and handles a hot garage better. In an East Texas garage that faces west, that difference shows up over the years.

Texture, grip and cleaning

Flake floors have a light orange-peel texture from the chips under the topcoat. It's easy on bare feet and gives more grip than a smooth gloss floor. If you want more, we can add a fine grit to the topcoat for ramps, steps or a wash bay.

Cleaning is a dust mop for grit and a regular mop with a mild cleaner for dirt. The flake pattern hides most of what lands on it between cleanings.

Flake floor questions

Is a flake floor the same as an epoxy floor?

A flake floor is a type of coated floor. The base coat is often epoxy, and the flakes are broadcast into it before the clear topcoat. Our Classic flake system is epoxy throughout; Premium uses a polyaspartic topcoat.

Can I pick my own flake colors?

Yes. Start with one of our blends in the floor designer, and we'll bring physical samples to your free visit so you can see them on your own slab and in your own light.

Do flake floors hide cracks?

They hide small pits, stains and patched areas well. Cracks are repaired before coating, but a crack in a slab that keeps moving can show again as a fine line over time. We'll point those out at your visit.
